Imagine designing a building the size of 14 football fields, packed with servers that power our digital world. Now imagine you have just ten weeks to do it. This is the high-stakes reality for Haskoning, a leading engineering firm with a 140-year legacy. Their Mission Critical Facilities team tackles the mind-boggling complexity of massive data centre projects where every detail matters and delays can cost millions.
The Challenge: Coordinating Complex Data Centre Designs Under Tight Deadlines
“Data centres are the beating heart of the digital age,” says Jeroen. “They’re the invisible force behind everything from streaming your favourite shows to storing critical business data”. But building these digital fortresses is a monumental task, fraught with challenges:
Tight Project Timelines
Completing detailed designs of a data centre larger than 14 football fields in as little as ten weeks.
Data Management of Large Models
Managing colossal models with hundreds of thousands of elements requires powerful tools and efficient workflows.
Communication is Key
Keeping everyone on the same page across different teams and locations is essential for success.
Ensuring High-Quality, Clash-Free Designs
Delivering coordinated, error-free models to minimise rework and ensure reliability.
Complex Coordination Among Multiple Disciplines
Integrating a complex web of mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural elements demands seamless coordination between multiple disciplines.
We work at top speed and cannot afford any room for error. A successful project is all about communication.

The Solution: Revizto — The Coordination Command Centre
Haskoning turned to Revizto to navigate this complex landscape, transforming it into central hub for design coordination and collaboration.
The Solution: Revizto — The Coordination Command Centre
Jeroen explains, "Setting up a project for me is never only just setting up Revizto; it's setting up that entire chain… But for setting up Revizto we have so much automated… After a day, a project is definitely good to start". In a landscape of projects reaching ever more daunting scales and complexity, Revizto allows for an efficient and scalable project setup workflow shown by their:
Automated Setup Processes
Automated processes allowed them to establish the basics in Revizto within an hour.
Leverage Appearance Profiles
These allow users to distinguish between different services, making model navigation easier.
Comprehensive Integration
They seamlessly integrated Revizto with their existing tools like SharePoint, creating a unified digital environment.
Real-Time Collaboration and Communication
Revizto provided a centralised platform for all team members, fostering real-time collaboration across disciplines. The ability to communicate directly within the model reduced the reliance on emails and external communication tools.
Single Source of Truth
All project data, from 2D drawings to 3D models, was consolidated in Revizto, eliminating confusion and conflicting information.
Issue management
Enabled a closed-loop workflow where issues are opened, solved, reviewed, and closed, ensuring accountability and transparency.
Issue Tracking with Precision
Predefined stamps allowed team members to quickly flag issues and assign them to the right person, streamlining communication and ensuring accountability.
Revizto is a medium. It's absolutely awesome. It takes so much of the communication away by having this stuff prefilled. But at the end of the day, we NEED to talk to each other - I'm not saying emails, mind you-talk to each other, that's how you get the best designs.

Enhanced QA/QC Processes
Revizto's tools allowed for ongoing quality assurance and control throughout the design process, rather than at isolated stages.
Continuous QA/QC: Team members were expected to spend at least one hour per week in Revizto for quality checks, fostering a culture of ongoing QA/QC.

Dashboards and Reporting
Real-time dashboards provided visibility into the project's status, allowing for proactive management.
Automated Clash Detection
Integrated clash detection within the platform reduced manual checks and highlighted issues early.
For us, Revizto is the QA/QC work in progress ongoing. I expect the entire team to spend at least one hour a week in Revizto. It's incredibly powerful to just go through that 3D model and tag issues.
Training and Adoption: Empowering the Team
Training was a critical component in ensuring all team members, including subcontractors and local partners, could effectively use Revizto.
Standardised Training Sessions
For every project, an hour-long training session was conducted to introduce the team to Revizto basics.
Positive Reception
The ease of use and effectiveness of Revizto led many partners to adopt the tool independently.
No One Left Behind
Everyone was encouraged to participate, regardless of their prior experience.
We spend one hour training the team… After one hour of Revizto, they understand the basics. And I don't have to fight them; they want to. We see a lot of our partners have now bought their own licences. That shows its power.
Measurable Benefits and ROI
The integration of Revizto in Haskoning’s workflow was significant, resulting in tangible time and cost savings.
Time Savings
Shorter Meetings, More Productivity: Coordination meetings were streamlined significantly reducing the time required each week, even for their largest projects.

Faster Issue Resolution
Automated clash detection and streamlined issue tracking allowed for faster resolution, enabling teams to focus on critical tasks.
BIM Managers Reclaim Their Time
Automated and efficient workflows freed up an estimated eight hours per week per project for BIM managers.
Our coordination meetings are typically one hour a week for these huge projects. That means instead of a four-hour session, my modelers are back working three hours extra every week. That's massive.
Improved Quality and Reduced Rework
"You spend more time. But previously, you didn't do it because it was too difficult," Jeroen explains. "Now you spend time doing it, but that's at the front end. You see that once you start doing the QA/QC continually, and at the back end, your model is better. There's less rework just before the deadline."
Early Detection, Reduced Rework
Identifying and addressing issues early in the design phase prevented costly rework during construction.
Streamlined Workflows
By automating routine tasks, engineers could dedicate more time to design optimisation and innovation.
Enhanced Model Accuracy
Continuous QA/QC processes resulted in more accurate and reliable models, leading to higher-quality deliverables.
Fun is the biggest factor. It became fun to work with tools again. It's fun to look at items. It's easy and the low threshold allows for my engineers to just go into the model and check it.
Conclusion:Collaborative Future, Powered by Revizto
Haskoning’s integration of Revizto has revolutionised their approach to data centre design. The platform not only enhanced coordination and efficiency but also fostered a more engaged and enthusiastic team.
Their commitment to communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement has positioned them as leaders in the dynamic world of data centre design. With Revizto as a key component of their toolkit, Haskoning continues to push the boundaries of what's possible, delivering high-quality designs at unprecedented speeds.
