How to Build Infrastructure That Lasts

Table of Contents

Infrastructure has always been the backbone of economic progress. Yet in today’s turbulent political and economic climate, turning long-term plans into enduring infrastructure is harder than ever.

That’s why we created Beyond Short-Term Gains: Infrastructure Strategies for Lasting Economic Impact. This new white paper draws on exclusive interviews with senior leaders from across the US, UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand—including policymakers, operators, designers, and sustainability experts. Together, they share candid insights on the challenges facing infrastructure delivery and the innovative approaches that can help overcome them.

This white paper is designed to spark dialogue and offer actionable perspectives for leaders in architecture, engineering, construction, and government. We’ve captured lessons learned from leaders in the public and private sector working on landmark projects like the Lower Thames Crossing, JFK’s Terminal One and HS2 railway.

Three key takeaways

  1. Political Will is the Keystone. Long-term political commitment is essential for delivering major infrastructure. Without sustained government backing across election cycles, even the most well-planned projects risk stalling.
  2. Standardization and Digital Tools Multiply Impact. Creating repeatable designs, supported by collaborative digital platforms, can save time, cut costs, and reduce errors while enabling innovation like robotics and AI on-site.
  3. Local Resilience is the Future. Supply chain shocks and geopolitical tensions are accelerating a shift to locally sourced, low-carbon materials, strengthening both community support and long-term sustainability.

I think transparency is the key to collaboration, because if people think you’re hiding something from them, or they’re not hearing the full story, they’re not going to fully collaborate either. So I’m a strong believer in setting out the ‘why.’ Be transparent about why you’re doing something, and why you’re doing it in a certain way.
