Civil 3D
Autodesk might be one of the best-known companies in the field of architectural software since they provide so many different variations of CAD software. This example is Civil 3D, software offering more than just classic CAD features. As the name suggests, Civil 3D emphasizes civil engineering as a whole, which is why the software is capable of generating 3D models of environments and designs while also being capable of synchronizing with BIM workflows for better collaboration, design-driven documentation, and more.
As with many other software products offered by Autodesk, Civil 3D works best when combined with the company’s other products, such as Revit, AutoCAD, 3DS Max, etc. That is not to say that the solution is incapable of doing anything by itself, far from it. Tekla Structures is a rather unusual example of a BIM solution. The sheer fact that it is web-based makes it far more unusual than most of the competition, and the fact that its set of features rivals a lot of its standalone competitors’ capabilities makes it even harder to believe. In all fairness, there are also plenty of limitations that Tekla’s solution has to work with all the time, including the mediocre overall performance, the inability to open more than a single model at a time, and the inability to handle large and complex models without slowing down to a crawl. And yet, Tekla’s capabilities in project information management and drawing generation are enough to make it a solution of choice for a variety of specialists in different industries.
Best free 3D architectural software applications
All of the examples of software above are paid, in one way or another. Due to the total number of solutions mentioned here, the “free software” section of this article is not separated further based on the primary use case for each solution.
FreeCAD
FreeCAD is 3D architectural software that is designed around parametric modeling. It can be used to work on practically any project during the early design and conceptualization stages. At the same time, FreeCAD is a surprisingly competent 3D modeling tool if the user itself has the time to invest in learning how to work with it.
SketchUp
SketchUp is a popular architectural drawing software application that is intuitive and user-friendly, and it can be used in many different ways, although it excels the most in quick design development and architectural visualization. Its main selling point is its vast library of extensions that allow users to customize the abilities of SketchUp, tailoring it to their tastes.

However, none of the disadvantages and inconveniences can even come close to beating the single biggest advantage of Tinkercad: its complete lack of a price tag.
TAD
TAD is a somewhat unique approach to BIM architectural software for several reasons. For one, it is extremely old by current standards, and it is also said to be made exclusively for architects. It offers a number of specialized features for the architectural industry, such as intelligent building component libraries and automated code compliance checking.
TAD incorporates many different design elements from scratch and provides a holistic solution for all of your architectural needs. It puts a heavy emphasis on practical architectural workflows, making it a valuable solution for companies that focus on institutional or commercial projects with rigid requirements for documentation accuracy and code adherence. It is not particularly popular, but the targeted feature set does make it very efficient when it comes to the very narrow set of use cases it accommodates.

It is a relatively basic solution with a variety of potential add-on extensions, but it does take a lot of time to get used to how it works (especially for users that have already worked with other, more popular software in this sphere).
