How SMP Alliance improved safety across UK highways
In 2021, the UK Government committed £390m for National Highways to add over 150 safe places to stop on existing motorways. It is called the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) Programme. SMP Alliance – a modern integrated enterprise made up of National Highways, Balfour Beatty, Costain, BMJV, WSP, Jacobs and Fluor – mobilized to deliver a vast majority of the program. The Alliance was responsible for delivering 138 emergency areas by the end of March 2025.
