The BIM/VDC King of the North – Magil’s Federico Pensa

Table of Contents

Federico Pensa knows a thing or two about digital collaboration.

While he is currently the BIM/VDC Director for Magil Construction, he has spent the last decade in the industry improving and optimizing workflows. Magil Construction is a leading construction contractor in Canada with offices in Montreal, Quebec, London, Toronto, and Vancouver focusing on worldwide industrial, commercial, institutional & residential construction projects.

Magil Construction owes its name to the architect Louis B. Magil. Graduating from McGill University in 1936, Louis founded Magil in 1948 and incorporated Magil Construction in 1953. Over the next three decades, the company built a renown reputation in the residential and commercial construction industry in Greater Montréal. In 1978, at the dawn of his 70th birthday, Mr. Magil decided to pass the torch to his successors.

Since their foundation, Magil Construction has been committed to building the vision of its clients across Canada and around the world. By carrying out countless projects in all sectors of construction for more than 70 years that our company has acquired its expertise thanks to the high standards of its achievements.

Magil has taken on the mission to respond to the challenges of the construction industry through innovation, creativity, and best practices in order to provide solutions adapted to the needs of its customers. All of which is done by maintaining the highest standards in quality and sustainable development.

Un-coordinated communication.

As the BIM/VDC Director, Federico oversees a variety of projects and teams. Disconnected communication channels and inaccurate or out-of-date information getting passed downstream causes costly bottlenecks and reworks. With the complexity of the teams and the amount of information being moved, small errors can have enormous consequences. Here are his pre-Revizto challenges!

Federico’s Top Three Pre-Revizto Challenges

  1. Limited collaboration and communication
  2. Not efficient coordination process
  3. BIM-VDC siloed to the office team and BIM managers

Improving the flow of accurate information.

Hearing from industry leaders such as Federico helps us at Revizto continuously improve the product – specifically how the Revizto is being leveraged, oftentimes opens our eyes to innovative uses of the product. As a BIM/VDC Director, many of the challenges Federico faced and then solved with Revizto tend to be common across firms. We often get told that some things are just “part of the job”, such as misinformation getting passed around and reworks happening on every project. Well, we disagree and so does Federico.

Federico’s Top 5 About Revizto:

  1. Collaboration and communication platform
  2. Coordination process management
  3. Mobile access to the BIM model and related VDC documents and resources
  4. Helping the whole team to comprehend the project better
  5. 2D documents/ 3D BIM model integration helping the VDC transition

ROI: 3D Collaboration instead of PDFs and Emails

Calculating ROI can be hard to estimate since every project is different. However, understanding specific process improvement and how things “would have been,” can help give a better understanding of the overall return.

I like to consider 3D collaboration through a cloud platform like the use of PDF and emails – instead of letters and emails, nobody really needs to consider an ROI for the use of PDF and emails, it’s just so clearly better… It should be the same with 3D and the use of a common data environment; it’s just so much better for collaboration, communication, coordination and comprehension! The ROI from using 3D collaboration instead of PDFs and emails is incomparable. We have great support from the Revizto team, and impressive and steady development of new features
